Dispersants for coatings

A dispersant or dispersing agent is a substance, usually a surfactant, that is added to a suspension of solid or liquid particles in a liquid to improve particle separation and prevent settling or clumping.

Wetting and dispersing agents optimize the process of dispersing pigments and fillers in the film former by improving the wetting of pigments, breaking up agglomerates, steric or electrostatic stabilization of the primary particles formed during the dispersion process.

The amount of dispersant in the paintwork compound formulation is determined by the minimum viscosity and / or sedimentation of pigment pastes with different content of dispersant additives. Since the dispersant can interact with the film former, affecting the quality of the coating (for example, the wet abrasion rate), it is necessary to select not only its amount, but also the grade of dispersion with which it can be used. Typically, the dispersant is used in an amount of 0.25-0.8% by weight of the pigment and filler.
